Instructions for Patients on Metformin
Who Received Iodinated IV Contrast Media
• You should not take your metformin (e.g. Glucophage ®, Fortamet, Riomet) or any other metformin containing oral antidiabetic agents (e.g. ActoPlusmet, Metaglip, Glucovance) for 48 hours following today’s IV contrast administration.

• You should check with your physician before restarting the metformin.

• Your doctor may want to draw your blood to check your kidney function before you resume taking your metformin.

• In addition, we advise that you drink plenty of fluids to adequately hydrate yourself over the next 24 hrs.

• Any questions should be directed to your primary care physician.
